Not only does this make the Berlin Wall seem puny by comparison, but the unforeseen effects, as always, will change the terrestrial landscape, causing more harm than good.
This is a Reuters story posted on ENN.com (Environmental News Network).

ENN FULL STORY
U.S.-Mexico Border Fence May Harm Animal Migration

September 29, 2006 — By Tim Gaynor, Reuters
DOUGLAS, Arizona — A plan to fence off a third of the U.S. border to stop illegal immigration from Mexico may harm migration routes used by animals including rare birds and jaguars, environmentalists and U.S. authorities warn.

The House passed a bill this month authorizing the construction of about 700 miles of double fencing along the 2,000-mile border, which was crossed by more than one million illegal immigrants last year.

The proposal, which the Senate is expected to vote on in coming days, seeks to build continuous barriers separated by an access road for patrol vehicles on long stretches of the border in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

Environmentalists and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wardens say the barrier would disrupt the migration of scores of species from jaguars to hawks and humming birds along a wildlife corridor linking northern Mexico and the U.S. southwest known as the "Sky Islands."

The chain of 40 mountain ranges links the northern range of tropical species such as the jaguar and the parrot in the Mexican Sierra Madre Mountains, and the southern limit of temperate animals such as the black bear and the Mexican wolf in the U.S. Rocky Mountains.

"Bisecting the area with an impermeable barrier such as a double reinforced wall or fence could really have a devastating effect on these species," said Matt Skroch, a wildlife biologist and executive director of the environmental non-profit group Sky Island Alliance in Tucson, Arizona.

"If they build it, we could really say goodbye to the future of jaguars in the United States," he added.

PIONEERS CROSSING NORTH

The proposal under consideration by Congress would replace a patchy, chest-high barbed wire fence that cuts across the wilderness areas of the southwest with large sweeps of continuous double barrier fencing topped with bright lights.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wardens in Arizona say the planned barrier would impact the fragile desert ecosystem, and could also harm migratory birds such as Gray and Swainson hawks and Rufous hummingbirds that soar over it.

"The fence would have a negative effect on everything from the insects that would now be flying around the lights instead of pollinating the cactuses, to the birds that eat them, right up to the large predators like the jaguars," said William Radke, the manager of the San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge, east of Douglas, Arizona.

Radke said the fence would prevent snakes and turtles, as well as wild turkeys and road runners from crossing. In addition, the bright lights at the top of the tall fence would interfere with birds' ability to navigate by the stars.

"A lot of migratory birds actually migrate at night, using stellar navigation and the moon to navigate. Suddenly lighting them up may disrupt a bird's ability to feed and rest and it may impact its survivability later on," he added.

Radke said the planned barrier would also sever the rugged highland trails used by "pioneer" jaguars currently crossing from Mexico and repopulating the rugged Peloncillo mountains east of Douglas after decades of absence.

The spotted cats originally roamed the Americas from Argentina in the south, to the Grand Canyon, in northern Arizona, but vanished from the United States several decades ago due to hunting and pressure from human encroachment on their habitat.

"The jaguars and a lot of the other wildlife that pioneer north from Mexico are coming here because their habitats are filling up down there," Radke said.

"If we cut off that access they are going to be restricted to areas where they are going to be in conflict with their own populations, it would have a negative impact," he added.

Source: Reuters

Apolitical Apostasy

I'm devoting this blog to headlines and news leading toward 2012. As the stories come, they will begin to form a cohesive picture of what is going on presently on the planet.
The first story comes from Linda Moulton Howe's Earthfiles.

September 26, 2006 - Global Average Temperature
Near Warmest in A Million Years.

Global average temperature is within one degree Celsius
of the maximum temperature of the past million years. This color-coded map
shows how temperatures changed on average from 2001 to 2005. 2005 was the warmest
ranked year on record. Dark red indicates the greatest warming and purple
indicates the greatest cooling. Graphic courtesy NASA.

James Hansen, Ph.D., Atmospheric Physicist, NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Columbia University, New York City, states in the most recent Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: "Earth is now reaching and passing through the warmest levels in the current interglacial period. That means that further global warming of 1 degree Celsius defines a critical level. If warming is kept less than that, effects of global warming may be relatively manageable. During the warmest interglacial periods the Earth was reasonably similar to today. But if further global warming reaches 2 or 3 degrees Celsius, we will likely see changes that make Earth a different planet than the one we know. The last time it was that warm was in the middle Pliocene, about three million years ago, when sea level was estimated to have been about 25 meters (80 feet) higher than today."

Outside the Veil

Six weeks in Guatemala and my core frequency is changing, still decompressing.

An interesting article about the Iranian military.

A Different Perspective

Six weeks in Guatemala and my core frequency is changing. As custodians of the earth, humans have done a pretty foul job since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution cleaning up our messes. We slash & burn, seek & destroy, all in the name of progress. But like little kids with their favorite toys, we just can't seem to get the hang of cleaning up after ourselves. Our forests are shrinking, that much is for certain, and restoring the balance is on no one's political agenda.
2005 was the hottest year on record, and the coral reefs have suffered terribly because of the rising temperatures in the Caribbean. Strange, becuase, to me, the fact that Earth is a living organism is a no-brainer. It goes through its cycles like any woman, and much of what the Maya foretold about 2012 could very have to do with the Earth herself. In Alaska, the eruption of the Augustine Volcano in January bears watching. It is relatively new volcano, and it's not done blowing yet. The ice melt being reported by Linda Moulton Howe and others is probably the single scientific story that bears watching. She will be on Coast to Coast AM March 17 with a full report.
Theories espoused by learned people about the effects of this ice melt abound, and it is worth noting that in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions this ice is melting faster than in any other time in the modern era.

Why 2012?

In Through The EyeBox

When looking into the 2012 situation, it is easy to become derailed by the many sources of supposedly viable information. I first heard about the Mayan Calendar and the end of the Mayan Long Count way back in the mid-1990s. Back then, with more than 15 years before the 2012 'end date', there was time to leisurely peruse all available material on the subject. My interpretation of the 2012 event has to do with the sun, and therefore the earth and the rest of the solar system, crossing the galactic center. As a result, consciouness opens up to a galactic rather than terran understanding. Sound like sci-fi? Maybe it is. But, if one wants to be scientific about this, rather than take, my word or the of some New Age theorist (of which there are many), a few notable sources come to mind.
The Mayan Factor, by Jose Arguelles, was one of the first books to grapple with this subject and bring it into the public consciouness. Though fascinating, unfortunately it is not an easy read, and tends to ramble through numerological permutations that may or may not hold up under mathematical scrutiny. Amazon reveiwers shredded Arguelles' book.
Arguelles also departed from the original Mayan Calendar (actually there's more than one 'count') and created the Dreamspell Calendar, which (in my humble opinion) may or may not be an accurate reflection of the original.
Maya Cosmogensis, by John Major Jenkins, is an abstruse tome that gets to its point the long way. Though helpful in unraveling some of the mystery surrounding the 2012 end date, the reader needs to wade through quite a bit of dross to get to the meat & potatoes. Amazon reviewers gave Jenkins higher marks than Arguelles, but when you read the reviews themselves, these people seem a little bit scary.
Then there's Terence McKenna, the brilliant, drug-using independent researcher who transmuted time into a 'novelty wave', a fractal representation of time which steadily increases in speed/novelty before ending abruptly in 2012, synchronizing with the Mayan calendar.
So basically, what we have here is a date, 2012, attacked from several different perspectives.
My conclusion is that if you feel the changes in your bones, you gut, your intuition -- if you know beyond the rational mind that something big is going on, you will be more drawn to try to flesh out the theories surrounding 2012 to inspect them for merit.
If you're a skeptic, you'll find much of the information surrounding 2012 to be hogwash, and you'll go turn on your TV.

Countdown to 2012

Greetings 21st century cybersurfers.
